Skin Salt Products
Mulgundawa Skin Salt is a naturally evaporated solar salt which is washed, kiln dried and crushed to a fine particle size.
Sodium fluoride and boric acid is added to make up levels in the final product which act as preservatives or biocides (levels available range from 1% to 2%). The biocide levels can be adjusted based on customer requirements to allow salt to be added that ensures preservation of lamb and skins as the first step in the skin treatment process.
The product also has application in processing a range of most fine textured animal skins. Mulgundawa Skin Salt is also suited to the salting of camel, crocodile and kangaroo skins and hides.
Australian Saltworks works in partnership with skin and hide processors to assist in the management of salt waste. Initiatives include provision of a wide range of options for biocide levels in salt products to assist in internal blending as well as the establishment of an EPA licensed salt recycling facility which allows reprocessing of waste salt from the skin salting process. This process involves dissolving and recrystallization by solar evaporation.
